Close adviser to Donald Trump vows US would win devastating trade war with China
Aide Anthony Scaramucci says it would cost China 'way more' if China chose to retaliate when the US sets import tariffs
ONE OF Donald Trump’s closest advisers yesterday vowed America would win a devastating trade war with China.
In comments that will spark fresh alarm, the aide Anthony Scaramucci said if China chose to retaliate when the US sets import tariffs, it would cost them “way more”.
He added the current trade relationship was “more favourable to China than us”.
The blast came as China’s President Xi Jinping warned no one would emerge as a winner from a trade war.
And in a slapdown to the President-elect he told the World Economic Forum, “pursuing protectionism is just like locking oneself in a dark room”.
He said: “While wind and rain may be kept outside, so are light and air.
“No one will emerge as a winner in a trade war.”
The row came as research revealed how a majority of voters around the world believe their country is in decline and the economy is “rigged” to help the rich.
Ipsos Mori said voters from the US to Europe and Asia appeared to be turning their back on globalisation – and were pining for outspoken politicians.
The research said nearly six in ten Brits think the country’s on the slide.
Some 80 per cent of the French want a strong leader “willing to break the rules”.
Ipsos Mori’s Bobby Duffy said: “We have seen high levels of discontent with the traditional way of doing things for some time now.
“Our study suggests that many countries around the world share the view that the system no longer serves them.”
