PRESENTER Laura Kuenssberg is on the cusp of becoming the BBC’s first female Election Night news anchor, The Sun can reveal.
She is expected to co-host coverage with News at Ten regular Clive Myrie as the Corporation moves on from the Huw Edwards era.
The position was vacated after he was suspended over claims, exclusively revealed by The Sun, that he gave £35,000 to a young person who sent him explicit images.
Laura, who hosts the BBC’s flagship Sunday morning political show, became a household name as the Beeb’s Political Editor during Brexit and the Covid pandemic.
BBC bosses believe she and Myrie will make a “formidable duo” for the landmark Election Night show, traditionally handled by one presenter — including Edwards in 2019.
It was first shown by the BBC in 1950.
A more American style co-presenting gig is being hailed by BBC bosses.
Journalist David Dimbleby and then his son, Richard, were the long-time anchors.
Huw Edwards is suspended pending a BBC investigation and decision about his future.
Insiders have reportedly said they do not expect him to return.
This week the BBC apologised to the vulnerable youngster’s family for failing to handle their initial complaint properly.
