My council house caved in over our baby’s cot – we’ve been left with gaping hole…I just want to know my kids are safe

Family illness delayed crucial intervention from councillors

A MUM has been left terrified after the ceiling in her baby's room collapsed over its cot - leaving a gaping hole in the roof.

The mum, who chose not to be named, was sleeping in the living room of her Hull home when the roof gave way.

Luckily, the tot wasn't in bed at the time of the horror incident, .

“I just need to be out of this property, to know that my children are safe,” the mum said.

Snaps of the scene reveal the extent of the damage - where sunlight is seen poking through the ceiling hole.

The mum suspects that mould may have caused the roof to cave in.

She added: “I just want us all to be safe and the clothes back for my kids – everything was ruined when the ceiling came down, including the children’s Christmas presents that were in that room.

The issue was first flagged to Hull City Council on February 9, when the mum noticed a drip coming through the ceiling.

Councillors gave her an incident receipt, which provided a target repair date of February 12.

But illness in the family prevented that intervention, and the ceiling continued to "get worse" as a result.

Then, on February 23, the mum said she heard a "weird noise" coming from the affected area.

She continued: “Then the full ceiling just went. I knew the night before it was going to do that, it was hanging, and I tried to remove stuff to one side.

"We were left on Friday night with the gaping hole – they put a carrier bag in it – and me and my children have been sleeping in the living room, which is underneath that bedroom.

"My baby's had to sleep in the cot base from the pram. There are stains now on the living room ceiling from the damp."

A spokesperson for Hull City Council said: “The council understands the position the tenant is in and is liaising with them to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

"We were first notified about the ceiling requiring repair on February 9 and arranged with the tenant for our contractors to attend and undertake this work on February 12.

"Unfortunately, we were unable to access the property at that time, so arrangements were made with the tenant to attend again in the afternoon of 22nd February.

"We were notified on the morning of that visit that the ceiling had deteriorated further so, when our contractors attended, the ceiling was cleared and the area made safe, with temporary repairs carried out to the roof the following day (February 23)."

The spokesperson said further plastering repair works had been arranged to be carried out on Monday "but the contractors were unable to gain access to complete them".

They added: "The council has liaised with the tenant again to rearrange this appointment.

“The property is due to receive additional works, including external insulation and re-roofing.

"This work, at the tenant’s request, will be carried out after they have moved out.”
