University student jailed for sexually assaulting student as she slept after celebrating her birthday
Samuel Bunyan, 21, claimed he was invited back to her house but later admitted two counts of assault
A STUDENT sexually assaulted a fellow undergraduate as she slept after partying with her to celebrate her birthday.
Samuel Bunyan, 21, had walked his victim back from the pub and claims he was invited to her room to watch videos.
But the woman awoke in pain and found her jumper had been pulled up and her bra undone.
She found Bunyan was in the bed with her and burst into tears, Durham Crown Court was told.
The court heard Bunyan had walked the woman home from a pub in Durham and claims he was invited into her bedroom to watch videos.
The woman woke with a pain in her groin, her jumper pulled up to her neck and her bra unclasped.
She messaged Bunyan on Facebook where he initially denied anything happened, but later admitted he remembered sleeping in her bed.
Mr Cleasby said when she pressed him further, he said he had “briefly” sexually touched her, and was “sorry”.
Durham University physics student Bunyan, of Diseworth, Derbyshire, admitted sexual assault at the city’s crown court and was jailed for 32 months.
The judge also imposed a restraining order, forbidding any contact with the woman, and made him subject to notification as a sex offender “indefinitely”.
The judge said he had specifically targeted a vulnerable victim.
