Theresa May becomes first British Prime Minister to be US Vogue magazine’s cover star
Renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz snapped the PM at her Chequers retreat last week
THERESA May has joined big names including Marilyn Monroe, Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama to feature on the cover of US Vogue magazine.
The PM, 60, was photographed by celebrated snapper Annie Leibovitz at Chequers last week and the edition is expected to appear on the shelves in April.
While Margaret Thatcher appeared several times in British Vogue, this will be the first time a Prime Minister has been on the cover of the US edition.
British-born editor Anna Wintour worked on the secret project for some time.
A source told The Sun on Sunday: “This is a huge moment for both American Vogue and the PM.
“Anna got Theresa on board with the idea. She’s been on the charm offensive and it’s finally worked.
“They shot pictures last week and Theresa gave an interview to go with it.
“Theresa’s team see it as a positive move too. It will make her appear a bit more personable to voters.”
Mrs May is a big fan of Vogue and takes great pride in her clothing choices, particularly her shoes.
Her team of advisers are keen to get her featured in magazines such as Vogue.
Liz Sanderson, who was brought in to manage her media affairs, has been praised for “softening” her image.
Vogue editors go to great lengths to protect the identities of cover stars.
British Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman posed with a fake front page in a BBC documentary on the magazine’s centenary last June to hide the fact the Duchess of Cambridge would appear.
