Brits suffering post-Christmas blues cost UK businesses £3,000 MILLION every year booking holidays at work

Workers dreaming of a break are most likely to book a trip on the 5th of every month, before 11am

BRITS dreaming of an escape are booking holidays at work - costing businesses £250m in January alone.

More than one third of Brits have admitted to researching a trip while stuck at their desk, spending hours at work booking overseas getaways while stuck in the rat race.

But daydreaming of an island getaway isn't free, with companies losing out in millions in lost time and productivity from their workers.

In new research, it has been revealed that Brits spend an average of three and a half hours booking holidays while at work - costing companies £250m in January alone, £3,000m a year.

One in three workers book the trip before 11am.

It has further been found that the 5th of each month is the most popular date to book a holiday.

As for destinations, more than 20 per cent have said they would head to Europe for a holiday.

Most are looking for a beach holiday, with many turning to Spain, France, Greece and Portugal.

Of those surveyed, a quarter said they would stay in the UK.

The figures are based ONS data on the number of working Brits (31,760,000), the average salary (£28,000) and average hours worked in the UK (1,645 per year).

, said: “January can hit us all quite hard, and seemingly in the pocket for employers.

"The research may come as a surprise to some, especially considering the majority of holidays bookings are done and dusted.

"On the plus side, that should have bought a few more smiles."

It comes after The Sun Online revealed adults were picking holidays that reminded them of their youth - picking trips to Disneyland over more serious holiday destinations.

The worst winter sun destinations to travel to were also revealed with a whopping 12,353 cases of food poisoning reported by Brit tourists in Egypt in the last five years.
