James Samuel Hurst, 28, of Littlemoor Lane, Oldham, has been charged with murder and will appear at Bury Magistrates’ Court today.

A post-mortem examination on Friday confirmed Mr McKenzie died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Mr McKenzie's heartbroken family paid tribute to the "much loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and uncle", who lived in nearby Rochdale.

An ambulance was called to the scene behind Promenade Street at around 11.25pm but he was pronounced dead.

A 33-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of murder but has been bailed until March 21 pending further enquiries.

A police spokesman said on Friday: “A passer-by discovered the body of a man in an alleyway to the rear of Promenade Street, Heywood.

“An ambulance was immediately called to the scene but the man – thought to be in his early 30s - was pronounced dead by paramedics. Officers attended and are treating the death as suspicious.

"A Home Office post-mortem examination is due to take place later today.”

Two police vans remained at the scene on Friday morning and officers were seen walking around the backs of terraced houses.

A police spokesman said: “Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting reference number 2211/120117, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
