Nando’s restaurant visited by food hygiene inspector after staff used chicken so old it stank

Leaked messages from a WhatsApp group chat appear to show employees extending use-by dates

A FOOD hygiene inspector visited a Nando’s after staff extended use-by dates on food to the point where it stank.

Workers have been accused of putting customers at risk by keeping chicken, rice and coleslaw after they went off.

The inspector interviewed staff at the Park Royal branch in West London

Ealing Council sent a food hygiene inspector to interview staff at the Park Royal branch in West London on Friday, February 9.

It came after messages from a WhatsApp group chat, understood to be used as a nightly changeover log, were leaked.

They appear to show employees risking potentially fatal salmonella poisoning through routinely extending dates.

One shocking message said 30 portions of pulled chicken had been thrown away as the dates had already been changed twice and it was beginning to smell.

A source said: “Staff were regularly being ordered to change expiry dates on food.

“Managers were in that group chat and had total oversight of everything going on. It’s effectively a diary of rule-breaking.”

A Nando’s spokesperson said: “We have strict safety procedures and robust training in place for handling food.

“Anything past its use-by date can never be served.  As soon as we were made aware of a potential issue, we launched an internal investigation.

“The restaurant was subsequently visited by the local environmental health officer, who left reassured that everything was in order.

“Park Royal has a 5-star hygiene rating.”
