The leaked messages show she was asked to give assurances over her independence from PPE MedPro, a consortium set up by Mr Barrowman to supply the NHS during the pandemic.

An email the bra tycoon sent to a civil servant at the Cabinet Office read: “I can confirm that I have no conflicts whatsoever in helping the company to achieve orders.

“I am neither a shareholder nor am I entitled to any financial remuneration or financial benefit.”

She also insisted her husband was a “very philanthropic individual”, adding: “He is passionate about the NHS.”

A spokesperson for the couple said: “The messages are taken out of context.

“Doug and Michelle deny any wrongdoing and have not been charged with any offences.”

Baroness Mone, 52, who was appointed to the Lords by David Cameron in 2015, is taking a leave of absence from the House of Lords.

She has also faced calls to be booted out of the Upper Chamber.
