George Clooney slams Donald Trump after his Twitter tirade at Meryl Streep branding star ‘overrated’ asking ‘aren’t you supposed to be running the country?’
The actor has worked with the Oscar winning actress in the past and came out in support of her Golden Globes speech which blasted the billionaire
GEORGE Clooney has hit out at Donald Trump over his comments about Meryl Streep after she made a politically charged speech at this year's Golden Globes.
The President-elect branded the award winning star “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood” on social media in the wake of her criticism of the billionaire, who she did not mention by name.
Clooney, who is a Hillary Clinton supporter and also a former co-star if the Oscar winning star, spoke out at a reception he was hosting on Monday in LA.
Speaking to he said sarcastically: “I’ve always said that about Meryl. She’s maybe the most overrated actress of all-time."
He then discussed their roles working as husband and wife on the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox and said with a smile: "I will tell you even as a fox, a female fox, she’s overrated.”
The actor then suggested maybe the President-elect should be concentrate on his upcoming role as leader of the free world posing the question to Trump: “Aren’t you supposed to be running the country?”
The event was held by The Clooney Foundation for Justice on Monday and was in support of White Helmets, which is a documentary on Netflix which highlights the work done by Syrians who are trying to help those who have been victims of bombings in the country.
The actor revealed he gets involved in causes as he wants to use his star power to help highlight them and bring them into the public consciousness.
Trump had tweeted his anger over Streep's comments earlier in the day and branded the actress an "overrated Hillary flunky."
Mentioning a performance from the past year that stunned her, she recalled an incident where "the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country" imitated a disabled reporter.
She told the audience: "It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can't get it out of my head, because it wasn't in a movie. It was real life."
She added that "when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose".
Trump blasted the star tweeting up a tirade: "Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes.
"She is a Hillary flunky who lost big.
"For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him 'groveling' when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad.
"Just more very dishonest media!"
He also told : "I was never mocking anyone. I was calling into question a reporter who had gotten nervous because he had changed his story.

"People keep saying I intended to mock the reporter’s disability, as if Meryl Streep and others could read my mind, and I did no such thing.
"And remember, Meryl Streep introduced Hillary Clinton at her convention, and a lot of these people supported Hillary."
The President-elect received criticism in 2015 when he mocked a disabled reporter from the paper where he seemed to imitate his disability.
The three time Oscar winner then discussed the topic of Hollywood being "vilified" for being a multicultural place and reviewed the backgrounds of a number of her colleagues dotted around the room.
She said: "You and all of us in this room really belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it: Hollywood, foreigners and the press."
She said that Hollywood is a community filled with people from all over the world, united in the mission to show different people and make audiences feel what they feel.
Streep said: "If we kick them all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts."
She said support was needed among her peers for the Committee to Protect Journalists "because we're going to need them going forward, and they'll need us to safeguard the truth".
