The presenter confronted Mrs May with the uncensored words Mr Trump was caught saying, claiming that: "When you're a star, they let you do it... Grab them by the p***y. You can do anything."

Ms Ridge then asked the PM: "Forgetting the fact that you're Prime Minister for a moment, how does that make you feel as a woman?"

She replied: "I think that’s unacceptable, but in fact Donald Trump has said that himself and apologised for it."

Pressed on whether she was willing to criticise him on other matters, Mrs May said: “Yes if we think something’s unacceptable we say that, but this is about more than one issue.

"I think there’s greater prosperity for both of us if we build on that relationship and strengthen it."

But she added: “The relationship that the UK has with the United States is about something much bigger than the relationship between the two individuals as President and Prime Minister.”

She said she was “optimistic and positive for the future” of the UK’s relationship with the US, that that she had experienced two “very good, positive conversations” with Mr Trump since his election.

It comes after the so-called ‘special relationship’ came under strain following the Republican’s election last November.

The PM was only the 10th world leader to speak to the controversial billionaire after he defeated Hillary Clinton whilst Nigel Farage got an audience with him at Trump Tower.

It was revealed Mrs May’s top aides Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill have been trying to repair the relationship, and arranged for the meeting between the pair after Mr Trump’s inauguration.
