Jeremy Corbyn travels 5,000 miles to ring in New Year with ‘political soulmate’ left-wing revolutionary Amlo

JEREMY Corbyn found his “political soulmate” during his New Year sunshine break - but had to travel half-way across the world to find him.

The Labour leader enjoyed a meeting-of-minds as he broke away from a winter holiday to meet a left-wing firebrand in Mexico.

Corbyn met up with Presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador while visiting relatives of wife Laura Alvarez in the country.

The posed in the Parque Museo La Venta alongside historic monuments in the city of Villahermosa, in the Tabasco region, in the south of the country.

Obrador, who will stand for the third time next year to be the country’s leader, has railed against Donald Trump who has proposed building a wall between the country and the US.

Writing on his Facebook page about the Corbyn meeting, Obrador said they spoke of the “beautiful dream” of making a world government - based on justice and fraternity, possible.

The meeting came before a poll rating that showed just FOURTEEN per cent of people see Corbyn as a potential Prime Minister.

One Labour MP said wryly: “The fact he had to travel 5,000 miles to find someone like-minded says it all.”

Corbyn linked arms with Obrador, known as AMOL, as they met in the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco.

The meeting infuriated several Labour MPs who said he would have been wiser spending the time concentrating on domestic issues such as Brexit and the NHS.

One said that he has been “abdicating responsility”. They added: “It has been noticeable that we haven’t heard from him.”

The same YouGov poll put Labour 13 points behind the Conservatives with union boss Len McCluskey saying Corbyn may have to step aside if ratings are “still awful” in 2019.

The Fabian Society said the party may even win as little as 140 seats at the next election - from their current 231 standing.

One Labour MP last night said: “Whilst Corbyn has been AWOL, tucking into his vegan enchiladas and sunning himself down Mexico way, the Tories have had a free pass.

“Though given how dire his personal ratings and the opinion polls are at the moment, maybe it would work out for the best if he stayed out there permanently”.

His holiday came as MPs and party members campaigned tirelessly in the Copeland, Cumbria, seat which will hold a by-election following the resignation of Jamie Reed.

Appearing on BBC News, Jeremy Corbyn said the NHS was in “crisis”. He demanded Theresa May explain to the House of Commons how she will fix “her failure”.
