Relatives fear he has only days to live and yesterday begged anyone who found the five medals, which include France’s Legion d’honneur, to give them back.

Partner Kathleen McDonald said she was at his bedside when he exclaimed: “My medals.”

She last saw him with them as he went for a stroll.

Kathleen said: “He must have dropped them.

“It would mean everything to get them back.”

Nick, of Hull, was a Merchant Navy ship gunner in World War Two.
