MORE than 80 firefighters have battled a huge blaze on a boat moored in Greenwich marina after a "gas cylinder exploded".
Dramatic footage shows crews tackling the flames on the permanently docked boat at Deptford, south east London, which had also spread to a houseboat alongside it.
London Fire Brigade was called after receiving dozens of reports from members of the public who said they had heard an explosion just after 11pm last night.
One man left the boat before the fire service arrived and another man was rescued from the neighbouring vessel by firefighters.
The fire service said no one was injured in the blaze, believed to have been caused by a propane gas cylinder.
Station Manager Norman Perry who was at the scene said: “Crews worked extremely hard to extinguish the fire and safely remove around ten other cylinders on the neighbouring boats to prevent the fire spreading further.
"Crews are using an aerial platform and water jets to extinguish the fire and steady progress is being made.”
Twelve fire engines and 81 firefighters and officers were called to the scene at Deptford Creek at the rear of Brookmarsh Industrial Estate, Norman Road in Deptford.
At the height of the blaze, 999 control handlers received more than 57 calls from members of the public.
The fire was extinguished just before 3am and crews say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
