THE worst of Storm Jocelyn is yet to come, the Met Office has warned - as 97mph winds spark flight cancellations and a "do not travel" alert after five deaths.

Amber and yellow wind warnings are still in force for much of the country.

The Met Office has warned of punishing wind gusts of up to 70mph in northern parts of the UK.

Coastguards are scouring the sea off Porthcawl in south Wales after a person was reported in the water just before 6pm yesterday.

The RNLI's all-weather lifeboats have been joined in the search by an HM Coastguard helicopter.

An amber wind warning for western and northern Scotland will end at 8am today.

Forecasters had warned of power cuts, phone signal outages, damage to buildings, travel chaos and life-threatening waves.

Trains to and from Scotland will likely be suspended until midday today after flooding and fallen trees blocked tracks.

Avanti West Coast told passengers not to attempt to travel north of Preston until at least noon.

Eight flights were cancelled at Dublin Airport and four at Glasgow Airport yesterday evening.

Heart-stopping footage emerged this morning of a Ryanair flight arriving at Leeds Bradford airport.

Footage shows the pilot struggling to land the plane, with the aircraft managing to safely arrive on the strip - but sideways.

Meanwhile at Manchester Airport, a flight full of passengers declared an emergency after several attempts to land.

The Singapore Airlines Airbus A350 had been due to land at Manchester after taking off from Singapore Changi Airport at around 2.30am this morning.

"Singapore Airlines flight SQ52, operating from Singapore to Manchester Airport on 24 January, diverted to East Midlands Airport due to high winds in the area," a spokesperson said.

"After refuelling, flight SQ52 subsequently departed East Midlands Airport at 11:44 and arrived safely at Manchester Airport at 12:24."

It is unknown whether the emergency was triggered by high winds.

Howling 97mph winds were recorded at the village of Capel Curig in the heart of Snowdonia.

A yellow wind warning is in force until 1pm for Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and north west England.

Another yellow warning runs until 3pm across north east England, the Midlands and south Wales.

The number of flood warnings has reached 21 in England and 37 in Scotland.

It comes after Storm Isha killed five people in 107mph gales over the weekend.

Dad-of-five Jimmy Rowe was named as one of the victims by his heartbroken family after his car veered off a flooded road in County Mayo, Ireland.

Elsewhere, Andrew Barker, 56, died in Bradford after reportedly falling down a "man-made trench" - which had been fenced off by barriers.

A neighbour said the storm blew the barriers over - and photos from the scene show them lying on the ground.

Three people died in separate weather-related crashes in Falkirk in Scotland, Londonderry in Northern Ireland and County Louth in Ireland.

James "Jimmy" Johnstone, 84, was the front seat passenger in the car which struck a tree on the A905 near Falkirk shortly before midnight on Sunday.

His family paid tribute to a "much loved and well respected family man who left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to have met him."

A statement added: "Our hearts are broken as a family however take great comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his beloved wife Anne."
