Trump's relationship with the UN

By SALONI SARDANA

US president-elect Donald Trump appears to be warming up to the United Nations (UN) following a phone call he had with newly appointed Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday days after he criticised the international body.

UN spokesman Farhan Haq said: This was an introductory phone call during which they had a very positive discussion on US/UN relations.

The secretary-general said that he looked forward to engaging with the president after his inauguration.”

Earlier last week, Donald Trump said on Twitter: “The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time.”

His criticism was prompted by incumbent president Obama’s failure to veto a U.N Security Council Resolution on 26 December demanding an end to Israeli settlement building on disputed land such as east Jerusalem and the West Bank.

The UN responded the same day by tweeting an image outlining several ways in which it helps the global community.

Trump has nominated South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for the US ambassador to the UN.

He has also nominated Rex Tillerson as Secretary of the State. Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said should both nominees get approved by the U.S Senate then he would work with them to “demand some reform and change”.
