40 mph, 2 wheels, 1 phone, 0 brain

Motorcyclist caught on camera risking his life as he takes both hands off handlebars to send text

The foolish rider was captured by a dashcam doing 40 miles per hour while sat upright on the bike using his phone

A BIKER was filmed dicing with death after he let go of his handlebars at 40mph — so he could use both mitts to send a text.

The idiot was captured by a motorist’s dashcam as he zoomed past on his Yamaha R3 gripping his mobile phone.

Horrified dad-of-two Kevin Smith, 23, said yesterday he only realised what the rider was up to when he played back the footage later.

The freight depot worker said he was near a junction in his home town of Kettering, Northants, when he noticed the blue and silver bike.

Kevin said of its rider: “He was sat quite upright whereas normally when you are on a bike you are leant forward.

“He wasn’t holding the handlebars and had something in his hands.

“When I watched the footage back at home I realised he was on his phone texting.”

He believes the numbskull was doing close to the road’s 40mph limit.

Kevin said: “If I’d not seen the biker coming and I had pulled out a bit there’s no way in hell he’d have avoided me.

“With him looking down at his phone he would not have been able to react in time. He was really playing with his life. It shocks me that people don’t realise that.”

A study by road safety campaigners Brake found one in five younger motorists uses their phone while driving.
