Tories must come together this week and back the PM’s Rwanda plan to help stop future tragedies

Labour’s lack of a coherent plan to tackle the issue, and its consistent opposition to any Tory attempt to do so, smacks of callous cynicism

Enabling evil

AS our politicians squabble over the legal details of the Rwanda Bill, another five people have tragically died in their attempt to be smuggled into Britain.

Whether they were genuine asylum-seekers or economic migrants seeking a better life is academic.

It is an appalling fate to drown in the Channel’s icy waters.

And yet, until the evil traffickers’ promises of a cushy future in Britain are proven worthless, more people will be persuaded to risk their lives in overloaded small boats.

Labour’s lack of a coherent plan to tackle the issue, and its consistent opposition to any Tory attempt to do so, smacks of callous cynicism.

It is content to sit back and watch as more and more lives are endangered — and organised criminal gangs rake in a fortune — so long as the Tories are tearing themselves apart over the issue.

Labour professes to have compassionate motives for opposing the Rwanda policy — but there is nothing compassionate about prolonging the migration crisis for opportunistic political gain.

Tory MPs must not let them get away with it.

They must come together this week and back the Prime Minister’s plan — however imperfect they consider it to be — to help stop future tragedies.

Iran’s puppets

FURTHER attacks on Red Sea shipping by Houthi rebels in Yemen seem depressingly likely, so the US and UK-led coalition must be prepared to carry out more strikes against their drone and missile sites.

To do nothing to counter the threat to global trade is not an option, but bombing alone will not end the attacks as the Houthis are not the main enemy.

These anti-Semitic thugs, like the terrorists of Hamas and Hezbollah, are mere pawns in Iran’s incessant quest to destablilise the Middle East and boost its own malign influence in the region.

It’s time the mad mullahs in Tehran, who also arm Russia with drones to bomb Ukrainian civilians, suffered meaningful sanctions to force them to end the supply of money and weapons to their proxies.

Deliver justice

IT MAY have taken a TV drama to spur it into action but since then the Government’s response to public outrage over the Post Office Horizon IT scandal has been commendably swift.

It has sought to exonerate wrongly convicted branch managers and speed up compensation.

It must be equally decisive in holding those responsible for the miscarriage of justice to account.

Not just for the sake of the hundreds of innocents whose lives were ruined, but as a warning to others in big business who think it is acceptable to trample over the “little people”.
