Investigation launched after man dies while in police custody on Boxing Day

AN investigation has been launched after a 43-year-old man died in police custody on Boxing Day.

The man had been detained by police in Glasgow on December 22, 2016.

A spokesman for the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner said: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has instructed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner to undertake an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 43-year-old man on Monday 26 December 2016, who had been detained by police officers in Glasgow on Thursday 22 December 2016."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "At around 1905 hours on Thursday 22 December 2016, officers stopped and detained two men on Saracen Street.

"A 43 year-old man took unwell and was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary to receive treatment.

"He died on Monday 26 December 2016.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner."
