He managed to drag himself to shore and climb up rocks to safety before making a dash to the nearest hospital, where he will be airlifted to the bigger Royal Adelaide Hospital.

A picture of his surfboard shows a bit taken out of it from the vicious attack in Elliston on Tuesday around 3pm.

Australian outlet quoted the surfer, Murray, as saying "Spread the word. No one goes in the water."

It comes just days after a Khai Cowley, 15, was mauled to death off the coast of another popular Australian beach.

His horrified dad witnessed the attack as a shark ripped his leg off on December 28.

The young surfer's body was pulled from the water near Ethel Beach in the Innes National Park.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to save him but were unable to.

South Australian politician Peter Malinauskas said after Cowley's death that the amount of Great White shark attacks seen this summer was "concerning".

“We’ve seen 11 fatal shark attacks in South Australia since the year 2000 so the fact we’ve seen three across this summer is startling and it is of concern," he said.

Murray was reportedly bitten on his leg before paddling to shore and refusing an ambulance to travel to hospital.

He said he needed stitches but was "ok", and is now in stable condition.

In May, Simon Baccanello, 46, was killed by a shark while also surfing near Ellison on the west coast.

He apparently warned children in the water before he died: "Don’t worry, get yourself to shore".

The local teacher's surfboard later surfaced with huge bite marks after being dragged by the beast underwater.

And in November, 55-year-old surfer by a 13ft Great White south of Streaky Bay.

Only a week later, Bridgette O'Shannessy, 32, was viciously attacked in while swimming off the coast of south Adelaide.
