She told The Sun on Sunday: “The Prime Minister’s taking the public for fools by pretending everything’s going fine. A year ago he promised growth. Instead, the economy’s shrinking.

“He promised to cut debt. But debt’s now hit record levels. And, for all his boasting, food prices and household bills continue to rise.

"The Tories have raised taxes to the highest level in living memory.”

Referring to the PM’s cut in National Insurance, she added: “Now he expects you to be grateful for his plan to take £10 off you and give just £2 back. He is robbing Peter to pay . . . Peter.”

The senior Labour politician said Brits deserve a government with a plan to grow the economy.

“This year you will have a chance to vote for that, through our changed Labour party,” she added.

Ms Reeves said Labour’s growth plan will “create jobs, cut bills and get Putin’s foot off our throat with homegrown energy”.

She said their plan will allow Labour to build new homes, reform the NHS, put more police on the streets and smash the gangs behind small boat crossings.

The MP for Leeds West promised Labour will never fast and loose with the public finances.

“Labour has changed,” she added.

“We will only make promises that are fully costed and funded. So when we say we want two million extra NHS appointments, we say we will close the non don tax loophole that means some of the super rich avoid paying their fair share.

“It’s a proper plan for national renewal - one that will give Britain its future back.”
