Keir Starmer accused of trying to ‘pull wool over people’s eyes’ amid talk he is set to U-turn on £28bn green splurge
Treasury minister Laura Trott has slammed Sir Keir for being slippery
SIR Keir Starmer has been accused of trying to “pull the wool over people’s eyes” amid talk he is preparing to flip flop on his £28billion green splurge.
Labour made promises to spend the massive sum on eco projects by 2028.
But leader Sir Keir and Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves will meet in the New Year to discuss junking the policy.
Senior figures in Labour privately admit the huge price tag is loathed by voters and will be used by the Tories to bash them in the election campaign.
Treasury minister Laura Trott has slammed Sir Keir for being slippery.
She told The Sun on Sunday: “We won’t let Labour pull the wool over people’s eyes.
“Labour’s dangerous £28billion spending splurge shows they haven’t really changed.
“Keir Starmer must come clean on which taxes he will raise to pay for this spending black hole — income tax, national insurance, VAT, taxes on homes or taxes on jobs?
“Whatever his choice, as always with Labour, hardworking taxpayers will pay the price.”
Tory Party deputy chairman Brendan Clarke-Smith said: “First he wants to borrow £28billion to fund this extravagant spending, plunging us into debt and adding to the cost of living and tax burden for every family in the country.
“Now he’s trying to quietly ditch the policy because voters are quite rightly asking serious questions about it.”
Tory MP Damien Moore said: “This spending splurge is bonkers. It will put an incredible burden on households at a time when everyone is talking about a cost of living crisis.”
The Labour Party said the £28billion pledge remains.
