The mum-of-three chose to exchange explicit messages and photos with the trio instead of reporting that they had smuggled mobiles.

Williams has now been jailed for 18 months after she admitted three counts of misconduct in public office, and one count of intending to secure unauthorised access to data.

Liverpool Crown Court heard she had been placed in the "Canal" wing of the Category B prison after completing her training.

Williams then began sharing "sexual messages and images" with the three inmates during the "intimate chats".

Despite the nature of the messages, she did not engage in any physical sexual contact.

The mum was caught when bosses received a tip-off that she was involved in inappropriate conduct.

Officers raiding her home found details of gang members who were rivals to the the lags she was involved with.

Williams had also searched a prison database to gather intel for one of the lags about the whereabouts of a fellow con.

Her barrister Matthew O'Neill argued the mum "fell into the arms of sophisticated criminals".

One of the inmates was Connor Crawford, who is currently serving a sentence for possessing firearms with intent to endanger life.

He has pleaded guilty to possession of a mobile phone in prison and was jailed for an additional six months.

Williams also messaged Craig Steenson, who was locked up for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

He also pleaded guilty to possession of a mobile phone in prison and received a further six months in prison.

The third inmate, who has not been named, is due in court next year.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris McClellan from the North-West Regional Organised Crime Unit said: "Relationships between prison staff and inmates greatly undermine and destabilise the prison regime.

"Sarah Williams became romantically involved with these prisoners just a short time after joining the prison service.

"Despite completing her initial training which included corruption prevention inputs, she continuously broke the law by starting multiple relationships with inmates, taking mobiles phones into prison, and for passing sensitive information onto these inmates that she had unlawfully obtained from prison IT systems."

It comes after a prison officer at HMP Parc in Wales was cleared of misconduct in a public office after an alleged affair with an inmate.
