Donald Trump says he will reveal new details about Russian hacking saga as he hosts lavish NYE party
President-elect declares he ‘knows a lot about hacking’ and will meet with US intelligence officials next week to learn more about Russian hacking charges
DONALD Trump says he will reveal new details next week about the hacking carried out by Russia to influence the US presidential election.
The President-elect has found himself in hot water after America’s top spy agencies released reports explaining how information stolen by Russian hackers had helped the controversial businessman win the race to the White House in November last year.
Trump, who used to star in reality television show The Apprentice, made the remarks alongside his wife as they hosted a lavish New Year’s Eve party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last night.
The glitzy get together saw his fur-wearing friends sitting down to a first course of Mr Trump's Wedge Salad made of Roquefort, grape tomatoes, bacon and red onion.
Speaking to reporters gathered at the event, he said he planned to meet American intelligence officials next week “to be sure [of the allegations] because it's a pretty serious charge”.
He added: “I know a lot about hacking and hacking is a very hard thing to prove, so it could be somebody else.
“And I also know things that other people don't know, and so they cannot be sure of the situation.”
Asked when he would tell the public the things he knows but they don’t, he said: “You'll find out on Tuesday or Wednesday.”
To date the President-elect has sided with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and not his own country’s top spy agency, the CIA, over claims Moscow-backed hackers tried to steer the election in his favour.
Current US President Barack Obama responded to the intelligence agency’s reports by kicking out 35 Russian diplomats living in the USA as part of a series of punishments aimed at Moscow for their interference – the Russian government has denied the allegations.
At the Florida event the President-elect also said that “no computer is safe” and expressing new scepticism about the security of online communications his administration is likely to use for everything from day-to-day planning to international relations.
He said: “You know, if you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way. Because I'll tell you what: No computer is safe … I don't care what they say.”
Trump rarely uses email or computers despite his frequent tweeting in which he wished “love” to his “many enemies” in a New Year's Eve greeting last night.
Trump’s New Year’s Eve bash at his Mar-a-Lago club is an event he hosts annually and this year saw hundreds of guests gathered in the club's grand ballroom.
Those donning their black ties and dinner jackets included film star Sylvester Stallone, model Fabio and the controversial businessman’s son Eric.
