President-elect posted backhanded tweet a day after the US government kicked out 35 Russian spies in retaliation for hackers interfering with election
DONALD Trump posted a gloating New Year message in which he wished ‘love to his enemies’ after a year in which he surprisingly won the US presidential election.
The President-elect said: “Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don't know what to do. Love!”
The backhanded greeting was published on social media website Twitter, the reality TV star’s preferred method of communication, just weeks before he is due to be inaugurated next month.
The formal swearing-in ceremony is due to take place on January 20 and will see the 70-year-old become the 45th president in the US’ history.
Social media user Ryan Love tweeted back: “Happy New Year!” Before following up with: “Just kidding, choke on it.”
Bess Kalb told the soon-to-be leader of the free world: “Oh sweetheart I know you think this makes you look brave, but you need to stop fixating!”
Several of his supporters got behind him by retweeting his message nearly 50,000 times and liking it over 100,000 times.
However, not all were happy. Ninja Warrior competitor Joe Moravsky said: “I'm a supporter of you Trump... but you really need to be more gracious and kind! Please?”
The controversial businessman overcame long odds to become the Republican nominee as well as the leader of the free world when he beat Hillary Clinton in the US election – despite receiving fewer votes nationwide.
He beat 16 other Republicans vying to become the party's White House nominee before taking on the Democrats and their nominee Clinton in last month's general election.
However, his victory has been the subject of much debate after America’s top spies released several reports saying Russian hackers had stolen information that helped Trump win the election.
In retaliation current US President Barack Obama kicked 35 Russian spies out of the country as part of a series of actions to punish Russia for their interference.
