Just hours after drugs and guns were seized in raids, the ex-Greater Manchester Police detective was found dead in his car submerged in the sea.

Police chiefs in the British Overseas Territory passed the case to a coroner.

But the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has told The Sun his death was an “unfortunate accident” and an inquest appears to have been scrapped.

Asked if relatives thought divorced dad-of-four Paul’s death was suspicious, niece Anne, of Bolton, said: “Everyone thinks the same thing. How do you end up in the ocean?

“We are angry we have been left in the dark.”

A source said Paul’s death in October rattled colleagues on the Caribbean isle of Tortola.

They said: “It has unnerved a lot of them. They’re not wanted there.”

Police Commissioner Mark Collins, ex-Chief Constable of Dyfed Powys Police, said: “I have nothing that suggests any foul play has taken place.

“I don’t think we can rule out a medical episode and I don’t think we can rule out a malfunction with the vehicle.”
