Police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder

A man was taken into custody after at least ten armed police swooped a house seven hours after the street stabbing.

Daniel Mihai Popescu, 28, has now been charged with attempted murder.

In a statement, South Wales Police said: “Daniel Mihai Popescu, aged 28, from Merthyr has today, Wednesday 6th December, been charged with attempt murder following an incident on Moy Road, Aberfan, Merthyr, yesterday morning.

“He will appear at Merthyr Magistrates Court tomorrow morning, Thursday 7th December at 10am.

“The 29-year-old woman who was injured during the incident has been discharged from hospital.”

It comes after locals told of their shock.

Witness Katie Roberts told Sky News that the woman attacked was “heavily pregnant”.

Roberts said: “I heard some screams this morning. I looked out my window and saw a man on top of a woman.

“I thought he was punching her at first – but then I realised he was stabbing her in the back.

“When I looked in the window, I could see her getting stabbed repeatedly, and I just darted out of the house then with towels and he ran off.

“I ran out the house immediately after. I ran to her in the street and held towels against her wounds.”

A local mum added: “We heard that all hell broke loose. She is heavily pregnant, maybe seven or eight months and she was taking one of her kids to school.

“But there are police everywhere and we heard the guy got away

“Aberfan has been through enough without all this.”
