RISHI Sunak yesterday demanded China up its eco commitments as he flew to the COP28 climate change summit.

He will use the gathering of 160 world leaders in Dubai to impress on other nations the importance of sticking to plans to limit global warming to 1.5C.
A No10 spokesman said: “There is some significant action that must take place to keep ‘1.5 alive’.
“[The PM] understands the challenges all countries — and that includes China, which is obviously vitally important — have to take action. We need to see not just commitments but real world demonstration of action . . . to make sure that this progress continues.”

The UK has driven down carbon emissions by almost 50 per cent since 1990 but China has seen a rise of 300 per cent.
Its President Xi Jinping will not be in Dubai, with deputy Ding Xuexiang attending.
King Charles will make a speech at today’s COP28 opening and Mr Sunak will use the summit to announce £1.6billion funding for climate projects.
This includes cash for clean energy initiatives and towards reversing deforestation. He said: “This is the era for action.”
