Who is Nicholas Joicey and what is his salary?

Nicholas Joicey, born May 11, 1970, is the husband of British politician Rachel Reeves and has had a long career in the civil service.

In July 2023, Joicey was appointed Defra Group Chief Operating Officer and Second Permanent Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

For this role, Government records say he earns £110,000 a year.

He began his career in the civil service after first starting out as a journalist at The Observer newspaper.

He then made the move to work as a private secretary and speech writer to the then-chancellor Gordon Brown, before working as director of the International Department at HM Treasury.

Nicholas Joicey worked at the Treasury

As Director for International Finance at the Treasury, he led the Treasury’s European teams and was seconded to Washington DC at the UK delegation to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Joicey then joined the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in January 2014 as Director General for Strategy, International and Biosecurity.

He was also Head of the Policy Profession in Defra, and a member of the Department’s Supervisory Board.

Joicey has also held the title of Director General, Finance at the Department for Work and Pensions from July 2018 to September 2022.

Prior to his current role he had been Director General, Economic and Domestic Secretariat at the Cabinet Office from September 2022 to July 2023.

Rachel Reeves and Nicholas have two children together.

Reeves announced her first pregnancy on September 20, 2012, and gave birth to a daughter called Anna.

The couple later welcomed their second child - a son called Harold born in 2015.

Who is Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves?

Rachel Reeves, born February 13, 1979, in London, is a British politician and former economist.

She is currently the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, having been appointed to the position in May 2021 by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

The politician replaced Anneliese Dodds, who held the position during the first twelve months of Keir Starmer’s opposition leadership.

Reeves was also the Labour MP for Leeds West until the seat was abolished in 2024, and has been an MP continuously since May 2010.

She's standing for re-election in the newly-formed constituency of Leeds West and Pudsey.

Reeves and her husband have a house together in Bramley near Leeds, as well as a home in London.

She studied at the London School of Economics and at New College, Oxford University.

She graduated as an MSc in Economics from the LSE and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at New College achieving a 2.1.

Before entering Parliament, Reeves worked as an economist for the Bank of England and British Embassy in Washington D.C between 2000 and 2006.

She then moved to Leeds in 2006 to work for the retail arm of Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS).

During her career, Reeves was also reportedly offered a job by the investment bank, Goldman Sachs.
