Half of UK to hit Boxing Day sales as Debenhams, Next and Topshop slash prices

Boxing day sales expected to be biggest spending day yet with Brits expected to blow more than the £2billion splashed on Black Friday

HALF of adults will make today Britain’s biggest shopping day ever.

Some 27million bargain-hunters will splurge £3.93billion — £5.5million a minute — as prices get slashed by up to 86 per cent.

The Boxing Day bonanza, which beats last year’s £3.76bn record, will be nearly double the £2bn blown on Black Friday.

Around 14million Brits are set to hit the shops, with some queuing from 11pm last night.

They will spend around £2.95bn, up 2 per cent on last Boxing Day, according to the Centre for Retail Research data.

A further 12.6million shoppers will splash out £984million via the internet, up 15 per cent on last year, online retail chiefs IMRG predict.

Some 206million visits to retail websites are expected, with online sales already under way.

Mega discounts include a ladies’ Alice & You black sequin dress reduced at Debenhams by 86 per cent, from £60 to £8.

The Entertainer is cutting some prices by 80 per cent, with up to 70 per cent off at M&S, H&M, New Look, Topshop and Asos.

Argos is knocking items down by up to 60 per cent, with 50 per cent off at stores including Gap, Clarks and River Island.

Prof Joshua Bamfield, of the Centre for Retail Research, said: “Boxing Day is now the big day of the year.”
