Lawrence family lawyer Imran Khan KC described the claims as “dramatic, disturbing and shocking” — and wants a Met apology.

It is claimed Mr Adams, now 81, was cleared by a police corruption probe in the 1980s following false evidence given by a man linked to the family of one of Stephen’s killers.

He later became a senior commander in a section of the force responsible for the murder probe.

Mr Adams was asked about corruption at the 1998 Macpherson inquiry into Stephen’s death but the report and its findings were not released.

The inquiry said it had not seen evidence that Mr Adams was involved in trying to hold back the murder probe.

He has always vehemently denied all allegations.

Stephen was killed by racists in Eltham, South East London, in 1993.

Only two men, Gary Dobson and David Norris, were jailed for the murder.

The Met Police said it will review any material given to it by the BBC.
