Why is American Apparel closing its UK stores, when will they shut and is there a sale?

NEARLY 150 staff at American Apparel lost their jobs just before Christmas after administrators closed 12 UK stores.

A total of 147 employees were made redundant – only the Camden High Street store is staying open.

Why is American Apparel closing stores?

The stores in London’s Carnaby Street, Covent Garden and Oxford Street will cease trading as 12 of the companies’ 13 UK outlets are closed.

It went into administration in November after falling foul of tough trading conditions in Britain and America.

Jim Tucker, joint administrator and restructuring partner at KPMG, said: “Over the last seven weeks, we have carried out our intention to trade all of the stores on a short-term basis in order to sell the stock and realise value for the creditors.”

The remaining 31 members of staff at Camden and the firm’s head office will be kept in the short term.

American Apparel in the US has filed for bankruptcy and the retailer has begun winding up its businesses in Spain, Japan and Australia.

The only Irish store closed a few weeks ago.

Will there be an American Apparel sale?

Sales have not been confirmed at any of the stores closing down, but it is likely that the stock there will be sold for a reduced price.

When stores close down they do tend to have sale to try and get rid of surplus items in the stores.

So keep checking back with your nearest store to see if they put on a sale.
