Deranged gunman kills UPS delivery driver outside Walmart because he thought he was DONALD TRUMP

Justin Barkley, 38 said "I shot and killed Donald Trump" at a hearing, where he was charged with the second-degree murder of William Schumacher

A MAN accused of shooting dead a delivery driver outside a supermarket claims he killed Donald Trump.

Justin Barkley, 38, is charged with the second-degree murder of 52-year-old UPS driver William Schumacher, who he waited for and fired at when he left Walmart on December 8 because he believed he was the President-elect.

He then had an eight-hour stand off with the police outside the shop in Ithaca, New York, before he was arrested for shooting Mr Schumacher and firing at officers.

Barkley, from Ithaca, said "I shot and killed Donald Trump purposely, intentionally and very proudly" in a court hearing on Monday, where he was also indicted for a charge of menacing a police officer.

He also said he "recognised the difference between mistaking a person for Trump and saying that he killed him."

When asked if there was any evidence to suggest the person he shot and killed was not Trump, he replied "I would hope not".

He previously admitted to shooting a person to death and firing a "sound shot" at cops trying to arrest him.

Behind him in court, Mr Schumacher's family cried as Barkley attempted to plead guilty.

But the judge ruled that he could not enter a guilty plea and needed to be examined by psychiatrists to determine whether he is capable of standing trial.

He will be assessed at either a mental hospital or jail, and will appear in court on January 6.

If convicted, he faces between 25 years and life in prison.
