British Airways told The Sun: "The flight returned to Heathrow due to a minor technical issue.

"The aircraft landed safely and customers disembarked as normal.

"We have apologised to customers for the disruption to their travel plans and will get them on their way as quickly as possible."

The Sun understands that customers have been rebooked and provided with hotel accommodation.

A live tracker on the Radarbox website showed how the Airbus A-350 turned back after flying over Ireland into the skies above the Atlantic Ocean.

It comes after passengers fell ill when "unknown fumes" filled a British Airways flight - with customers rushed off the plane at Heathrow.

Emergency services scrambled to the Terminal 5 runway after the plane arrived from Barcelona earlier at around 4.15pm on October 8.
