Relying on click and collect for Christmas shopping? Tesco and Sainsbury’s are nearly fulled booked

Some shops, including Tesco and Sainsbury's, are running out of delivery slots sparking fears of Christmas shopping chaos

CHRISTMAS shoppers are being warned not to rely on last minute click and collect or online delivery orders as some shops have revealed they are almost booked up.

Sainsbury's and Tesco only have a "handful" of delivery slots left, while John Lewis has extended its deadline for click and collect orders.

It has left some shoppers in a panic that they may face large queues or delays, plunging their plans into chaos just a few days before December 25.

Sainsbury’s warned shoppers that virtually all their click-and-collect slots for Friday had been snapped up.

Customers are also unlikely to be able to book a home delivery slot this week either.

A spokesman from Sainsbury's said: "Almost all of our slots for both services are almost sold out, though there are a handful of both available.

"The slots for Christmas week went live on 2nd December and customers were quick to reserve these in advance."

Tesco confirmed to the Sun Online that only a very "limited" number of click and collect slots were available over the next few days.

John Lewis has extended its deadline for click and collect orders from tomorrow to 8pm on Friday December 23, due to unprecedented demand.

The cut off date for ordering to collect at Waitrose shops remains the 22nd December, in line with previous years.

Marks & Spencer also said customers who want in-store collection on Friday or Christmas Eve must place their orders by tomorrow, although it's policy has not changed from last year.

Retail experts said click-and-collect customers may face queues to pick up their shopping, despite choosing that option in a bid to avoid lines.

Gary Caffell, deals editor at MoneySavingExpert.com said: “While retailers do give a cut-off date you need to order by to get your item before Christmas, there are no guarantees.

"Often a spanner can be thrown into the works, such as the threat of workers striking or bad weather, so you need to weigh up the risks and any additional costs compared with possibly paying a bit more on the high street.

“If buying online, you should always do it as soon as possible to minimise the risk of disappointment.”
