The 44-year-old is also accused of attacking his housemate, Javed Nouri, at the migrant hostel in Hartlepool where they live.

He was arrested in blood-stained clothing with a large knife nearby, it is alleged.

Alid appeared via video link today at the Old Bailey flanked by four security officers.

The Moroccan national, aided by an Arabic interpreter, did not respond when asked to confirm his name.

Alid, who is charged with murder and attempted murder, instead replied: "I'm very ill, I cannot talk, I cannot speak."

The court was told the criminal investigation is still at an early stage but is believed to be terror-related.

Prosecutor Ben Lloyd said: "Although the investigation is ongoing police at this time consider the offending to have been motivated by terrorism."

Alid was remanded into custody ahead of a preliminary hearing on October 27.

Police raced to the scene at around 6am on Sunday after Javed was knifed in the chest, legs and mouth.

Alid then allegedly ventured outside where he stabbed Terrence in the chest and neck.

He was charged following an investigation by Counter-Terrorism Policing North East and Cleveland Police.
