"We have the wrong man," said the source.

"The real culprit is still armed at large and can cause new damage. The capital's police and the special forces were informed."

It was reported earlier that the Polish driver of the truck the attacker hijacked was shot - raising the terrifying possibility that a jihadist is on the loose and armed.

So far 12 people are confirmed dead and 45 injured. Authorities have confirmed they believe the incident was an attack and have arrested a Pakistani man who they believe was the driver of the truck and who had fled immediately after the attack.

Earlier, German Minister of the Interior, Thomas de Maizière, reported that the suspect had denied the offence.

Meanwhile Ariel Ariel Zurawski, owner of the trucking company and cousin of the driver murdered in the cab, said that his employee had "fought for his life."

He said he had been shown a picture by police of the dead man whose face was "bloated and swollen" and bore traces of stab wounds.
