Locals baffled as bizarre 330ft-long object washes up on remote New Zealand beach
The massive piece of plastic was found washed up on the shores of Te Waewae Bay in New Zealand's South Island
A MYSTERY 330ft-long piece of piping is the latest bizarre object to be found washed up on a remote New Zealand beach.
Local authorities have been left baffled after the massive plastic pipe was discovered in Te Waewae Bay, in the South Island.
Environment Southland posted images of the strange object on Facebook, asking for help identifying it and its possible owners.
The post stated: "Any ideas on what this might be? Or who might be missing it? This 100 metre long object washed up on Te Waewae Bay in western Southland this week.
"Our Deputy Harbourmaster Ian Coard has been out to have a closer but says no one seems to know what it is or who it belongs to.
"The object is long, black, made of some kind of plastic, has metal loops in each end and is pretty heavy."
"We've been to check it out today and attempted to move it with a couple of people, but it didn't want to budge."
After the photographs were posted online, dozens of people put forth theories as to what it was once used for.
One wrote: "Looks like a length of welded polyethylene pipe with towing eyes on each end for directional drilling. I'm sure some local contractor with PE pipe welding experience will recognize it."
Others said it appeared to be an oil cordon, or an item used in fish farms to crowd fish out of cages - which had drifted all the way from Tasmania, Australia.
The huge piece of piping is the second strange object to wash up on New Zealand beaches in recent days.
A week ago photos of an "alien-like creature" covered in barnacles went viral after they were posted online.
The strange find was dubbed the "Muriwai Monster" - named after the beach near Auckland on which it was found.
