The removal comes after Commander, a two-year-old German shepherd, bit a Secret Service agent in September - the latest in a string of nearly a dozen incidents.

"The President and First Lady care deeply about the safety of those who work at the White House and those who protect them every day," Elizabeth Alexander, communications director for the First Lady, told .

"They remain grateful for the patience and support of the U.S. Secret Service and all involved, as they continue to work through solutions," Alexander added.

"Commander is not presently on the White House campus while next steps are evaluated."

From October 2022 to January 2023, there were at least 10 documented incidents involving Commander, according to legal activist group Judicial Watch.

One of the more serious instances occurred in November 2022 when a Secret Service agent was bit.

The officer was bitten on the arm and thigh and was referred to the hospital for treatment, according to the .

But there may be even more unreported incidents, according to CNN.

In addition, Major was also involved in several incidents before being removed from the White House in December 2021.

Major now lives with friends of the Biden family in Delaware.

It is unclear if or when Commander may return to the White House.
