The clip was posted on YouTube yesterday and shows the suited and booted Conservative politician trying to squeeze the tree into the back of his Toyota Previa.

Despite repeated efforts the tree kept sticking out of the back of the boot and it has been reported he had to give up and leave the tree at the shop.

One onlooker told the Mail Online: “It went on for about three or four minutes, you could see him pushing himself into the car but the tree just wasn't going in.

The former mayor of London is no stranger to public embarrassment with the blonde bombshell memorably getting stuck on a zip wire in London during the 2012 Olympics.

He was left stranded in mid-air wearing a helmet and a snugly fitting harness while he waved two small Union Jack flags in a humorous display of patriotism.

In October 2015 he went to Tokyo, Japan, on an official visit in which he played some rugby with some local schoolchildren.

Boris was a keen rugby player as a teenager at school in Eton and the sport has become increasingly popular in the east Asian country, who memorably beat giants South Africa during the Rugby World Cup in England last year.

While lobbing a ball about in front of cameras and a Japanese crowd during the visit, Boris clattered into ten-year-old Toki Sekiguchi.

The boy was sent flying and said afterwards: “I felt a little bit of pain but it's OK.”
