Mum horrified after she finds dead SLUG in five-week-old baby’s Cow and Gate formula milk
The powder from the infected tub had been making her daughter sick for days
A DISGUSTED young mum was left fearing for her baby daughter's health after finding a dead SLUG in her formula milk.
Bethany Dawn was shocked to discover the slimy inch-long mollusc in a tub of Cow and Gate Stage 1 formula, which she had fed to five-week-old Holly for at least three days.
Now she is warning other parents to check their formula milk after the gruesome discovery made Holly sick.
Bethany said: "My daughter had been a bit sick for a few days since I'd started using the tub.
"She couldn't keep anything down and was very lethargic.
"The gaps between her feeds were also getting bigger and then when I was making another bottle I found there was a slug in the powder.
"It must have been in the scoop when I was making the bottle but I didn't see it at first then I saw something in the powder and thought 'oh my god'.
"There was a blob covered in powder so I rinsed it off and then thought 'Jesus, it's a slug'.
"It was about an inch long, maybe more, and when I saw it I was absolutely mortified.
"I'm absolutely disgusted at Cow and Gate and I recommend that everyone should now check their baby formula."
The mother-of-one bought the powder at the ASDA in Ramsgate, Kent, and has since been back to the shop to show staff her grisly finding.
She said the store immediately refunded her and also gave her two extra tubs, before taking the slug and the remainder of the product for testing.
Bethany added: "I'd been so worried about Holly being poorly so to then find that there was a dead slug in her powder has made me worry even more.
"But she did start to improve straight after the first bottle made up from the new tub.
"ASDA have been really good considering it's not their fault and Cow and Gate have told me it is the first complaint of its kind they have received.
"Now I am waiting for the results of an investigation but I just don't understand how it got in there."
A spokeswoman from Cow and Gate said she was "concerned to hear about Miss Dawn's experience" adding the company takes the quality of its products "very seriously and always investigates every complaint thoroughly".
She said: "We believe that it is extremely unlikely that this happened at our factory.
"Our formula milks are produced and packed in a highly controlled and hygienic environment, with robust pest control systems in place.
"All our formula is passed through a very fine sieve just before it is packed and sealed.
"Complaints like this are very rare and our investigations reveal they do not originate in our factories.
"We have not received any other similar complaints about this batch of milk.
"We have spoken to Miss Dawn and explained the steps we will be taking to investigate."
Bethany is now warning other parents to be vigilant after the gruesome discovery made Holly ill.
Despite the manufacturer telling her they would investigate the slug when she reported it on Friday, she is still waiting to hear the results of their tests a week later.
Bethany said: "I had a phone call yesterday from someone at Cow and Gate telling me they'd received the tub and were going to test it.
"They haven't really said anything since Friday though, I've been trying to contact them and get something out of them but they've not done a lot.
"I feel like they're being nice because they don't want to upset me, I don't feel like they're doing loads about it.
"They're doing what they need to but they should be going above and beyond.
"Holly was ill for four days, since we'd started using the milk, and then as soon as we stopped using it she was fine."
