A 22-year-old man living at the address with her was also reportedly stabbed by the attacker but survived and is now recovering in hospital.

Police last night linked the two incidents and launched a murder investigation.

A spokeswoman said: "All three people knew each other."

The drama unfolded at around 11am when officers rushed to the £370,000 home in the quiet village after receiving reports a woman had been injured.

A man who dialled 999 was also found badly wounded and rushed to hospital.

Thirty minutes later a 44-year-old man died after being hit by a lorry on the southbound M1 near Trowell Services, Notts., ten miles away.

It is believed he threw himself onto the carriageway from a motorway bridge.

Last night a large green tent could be seen on the carriageway beneath a pedestrian overpass.

The incident shut the motorway for most of the day, causing traffic chaos in the region and leaving thousands of motorists stranded.

Derbyshire Police confirmed officers weren't looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

A spokeswoman added: "We can confirm we have launched a murder investigation after a 38-year-old woman was found injured at a house and later pronounced dead at hospital.

“Police were called to a house in Borrowash after a 22-year-old man who had been injured raised the alarm. He is now being treated in hospital.

“Thirty minutes later a 44-year-old man died after a collision with a lorry on the southbound carriageway of the M1 between junctions 26 and 25.

“More information will be released once formal identifications have taken place.”

Shocked eyewitnesses told how a man was seen covered in blood outside the house after having apparently been stabbed.

Local florist Louise Winson said: "I looked outside and he was saying 'Help me, please help me'.

“You couldn't see his face for blood, it was just pouring. I was in complete shock.

“He was in the middle of the road with no shoes on, just staggering.

“Then he was laying on the side of the road. He was just a mess.”

Neighbour Michael Nightingale added: "I drove past and paramedics were wrapping up a young lad in tin foil. I think he was in shock.

"Then a police van turned up and they cordoned the house off.

"I've lived here ten years and never seen anything like this. He ran into the flower shop with stab wounds all over his face shouting for help."

Residents said a young family had moved into the house just weeks ago.

Irene Davies, who lives a few doors away, said the family were the “perfect neighbours and the nicest people you could meet”.

She added: “This is an absolute tragedy. I'm gutted and totally heartbroken.

“They were perfect. A fantastic, loving young family who seemed so happy.

“They were wonderful people. The man was very helpful and he helped my husband out doing jobs.

“My husband is in his 80s and so he would help and ask if he was okay and lend us things.

“His wife was really nice. We had nice chats and he was the perfect neighbour.

“Their son was a real credit to them. He was very nice, polite and had been brought up really well.”

Another neighbour said: “They were a really nice family. They had only been there a couple of months and didn't mix a lot with people.

“But they were the perfect neighbours. I would talk to them and they were nice. It's devastating news. I cannot believe it.”

The house, with two cars outside, remained cordoned off last night, and detectives began carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.
