Aldi Prosecco Infusion teabags have Italian winemakers threatening to sue over use of name

ITALIAN winemakers are threatening to sue Aldi over the name of their Prosecco Infusion teabags.

The budget supermarket are selling the herbal tea as part of their Christmas range, promising a ‘vibrant festive taste with an invigorating Italian prosecco profile.’

But according to theprosecco makers are up in arms, saying the chain have no right to use its name to sell the tea, which has been a hit with customers and sold out online.

Stefano Zanette, who runs the Consortium for the Protection of Prosecco, in Italy’s Veneto region, said:

“They just cannot rip off our name like this.

“Prosecco is a particular product made here in our region with the finest grapes and traditional skills of winemakers.

“We are demanding this product is banned and will look at legal action if it is not removed immediately from shops.

“We have had several similar legal battles in the past and won them. We will win this one as well if needs be.”

The teabags, which cost £1.89 for a box of 15, have been flying off the shelves, with thirsty customers even swapping sightings of stock on Facebook in a bid to get their hands on some.

One delighted shopper tweeted: “Just found out Aldi are selling Prosecco infused teabags. My joy is unconfined.”

Whilst another desperate customer posted on: “Another store in #Leeds down @catlindley1 and still not a sniff of the precious prosecco teabags 😫Help us @AldiUK!” as they tried to find a store with them in stock.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “The packaging clearly states that these tea bags are an infusion consisting of a range of ingredients such as white hibiscus, apple pomace and rosehip.

“This product is part of our extensive Christmas range and has proved extremely popular with customers. It has now sold out in most of our stores.”
