THE LIFE AQUATIC

Inside abandoned underwater ‘city’ with hairdresser and supermarket 100ft under – but not all is as it seems

AN ABANDONED underwater city, 100ft under the sea, has become a hotspot for divers after it was built 58 years ago for a movie but never used.

The bizarre, secret French town has a hairdresser, supermarket, church, town square, an amphitheatre and even a lawyer’s office.

The miniature city has a hairdresser, supermarket and lawyer’s office among its buildings

It was built for a French musical but it proved too tricky to film underwater

What makes the buildings so fascinating is that the tallest one is only a metre high.

Not all is as it seems as the city isn’t like other underwater marvels that have sunken overtime.

This was always meant to be this small under the French Riviera as it was going to be used in a film.

The aquatic town, off the Cap d’Antibes, was quickly built in just two years by French filmmakers next to a small lighthouse.

Filming for the musical L’Enfant et la Sirene (The Child and the Mermaid) started in 1965 but it proved a tricky ask.

The ambitious approach to filming underwater was scrapped as it became a nightmare.

Instead the filmmakers used an animation studio in Paris.

The wacky musical directed by Sylver Néjad Atzamba, never ended up being finished and the miniature underwater town was forgotten on the seabed and left to the fishes.

It was untouched for decades as the structures became badly decayed and covered in algae.

Fish used it as a hang out and the remains were forgotten about until 2007 when a restoration project started.

It saw the buildings being cleaned and repaired and some new additions were even added like ceramic tiles and bridges.

The new look city has made the area a popular spot with divers as they swim around getting a glimpse at the old movie set.

Tiny houses are popping up all over the world recently like Precious Price, 26, in Atlanta.

She bought the small structure in her backyard and lives there with her dog.

According To Precious her old house was too big for her.

Like the legend of Atlantis, many cities have been lost to the seas.

From a Chinese city as big as 62 football pitches to an ancient Egyptian city that completely sank in the 8th century AD and was found as recently as 2000.
