Harrowing bodycam captures moment cop is gunned down during routine traffic stop and the battle to save his life

The officer is seen crying out in pain and claiming he has been shot in his side

DRAMATIC footage has shown the moment a police officer is shot during a routine traffic stop in America.

The shooting reportedly took place at around 8pm on Monday in Lavonia, Georgia.

The video, captured on a body camera show the moment the officer is shot and then the aftermath.

The officer is seen approaching a man who they have stopped and as they are checking him for weapons there is a bang.

Crying out in pain, claiming he has been shot in his side and shouting 'I'm gonna bleed out', the officer somehow manages to make his way to a nearby police car to lay down.

Police radios can be heard in the back ground and officers can be seen hovering over their colleague, asking if he is alright.

When police officers pulled over a car for a traffic stop at a Zaxby's restaurant in Jones Street they discovered the vehicle was stolen.

Investigators said when the officers attempted to arrest the driver they pulled out a handgun and shot both of them.

On Tuesday morning police identified the two officers who were shot.

Michael Shuman, 50, was shot under the arm pit and is in intensive care at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Jeffery Martin, 22, was sot in the hand and was also taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital but later released.

It is not known which officer is featured in the video.

Gordon was caught about two miles from the scene at around 11.15pm and arrested.

He appeared before a judge on Tuesday and his was remanded in custody with his bond denied.

He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.
