BRITS will enjoy 22C sunshine today, forecasters have said - but warned rain and cloudy conditions are just around the corner.

Most parts of the UK will see a cool start to the day with some pleasant sunny spells, the Met Office says.

It will turn cloudier from the northwest as the day progresses and rain is due to arrive in the afternoon across Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

The winds will grow stronger in those areas and some coastal gales are expected, the Met Office predicts.

Down in the southeast though, it will remain rather warm with the mercury hitting 22C at around 4pm in the London area.

Met Office meteorologist Claire Nasir said: “By lunchtime we’ll see the first of the rain move in across Northern Ireland, western Scotland as well.”

She added: “Anywhere from probably Yorkshire, across much of England and Wales through the afternoon, fine conditions, patchy cloud, some sunshine, the temperatures high teens, low 20s.

“Feeling cool under this wet and windy weather which will be relentless through Wednesday evening.”

It will remain windy in Scotland overnight with the rain clearing from the east.

However, that rain will linger across northern England and Wales.

Further south it will be drier with some clear spells.

It will feel less chilly during the night than in recent days, especially in the north, the experts predict.

Thursday will see cloud with patchy outbreaks of rain across central parts.

It will remain warm with sunny spells in the south with temperatures hitting 24C, while in the north it will be cooler with sunshine and showers.

In the far north though it will be windy.

Looking further ahead, Friday is expected to remain changeable with further spells of rain.

In the southeast it will turn warmer and humid once again on Saturday and there could be a risk of thunderstorms.

More rain and thunder is expected on Sunday.
