MPS and peers are turning their backs on crumpet — and prefer a croissant instead.
They scoffed 28 times more of the flaky French fancies than the absorbent British breakfast treats at Westminster last year.
The Parliamentary battering sparked calls for MPs, Lords and staff to back our traditional snack.
In 2022, just 753 crumpets were bought at cafes and snack bars around the House of Lords and Commons - compared to a colossal 21,049 croissants.
Most, 13,406, were plain butter, with 7,191 almond and 452 chocolate.
Tory MP for Amber Valley Nigel Mills said: “These figures show that we need to take back control of our own breakfast products.

“I do like a crumpet so will try to eat more of them.”
Karen Dear, of the Craft Bakers Association, hailed the British classic, to be eaten at any time.
She said: “You can top it with practically anything, from butter and jam, to cheese and chocolate spread.”
Kit Kats were the most popular chocolate bar, with more than 8,000 sold, just pipping Twix and Snickers.

Some 7,178 slices of carrot cakes were sold, more than double the runner-up, Victoria Sponge, on 3,333, according to a Freedom of Information request.
