Cops swoop on man at Stansted Airport on suspicion of trying to join ISIS in Syria

POLICE have swooped to arrest a man at Stansted Airport they believe was on his way to join ISIS in Syria.

The 41-year-old was stopped by anti-terror cops at the Essex airport as he arrived to board a flight to Istanbul on Friday.

He was taken to a South London police station and remains in custody.

Counter terrorism police confirmed he had been arrested under the Terrorism Act after arriving at the airport.

Only five days ago a man was arrested at Stansted after arriving back from the Turkish city.

The suspect, 49, from south Essex, was taken in on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

Nearly 1,000 Brits are believed to have travelled the Middle East to join ISIS since it tore through Syria and Iraq in 2014.

Seventy-five have been convicted of offences related to the trips.

They are then smuggled across the country's southern border with Syria.
