This week's unpredictable weather has thwarted many planning on enjoying the last days of summer.

But sun-lovers are in luck with some decent rays set to peek through before August ends.

Parts of the UK will see a bright day with sunny spells today but in the southwest it will feel cool under cloudy skies.

Heavy rain is likely to take over the Midlands and southeast areas as the day progresses.

Through Thursday evening bands of rain will continue to spread northwards but it will dry out.

Conditions are expected to become warmer as the week ends with some decent spells of sunshine and highs of 20C or 21C.

The southwest should see temperatures around 19C to 20C where it will brighten up with the possibility of heavy showers on Friday across northern areas.

Overnight, the rain is likely to stop giving way to a clear evening for most of the UK.

Rain will also clear in Scotland, leading to some late sunshine.

However, Brits will finally be able to enjoy glorious skies on the weekend when temperatures are set to reach over 20C.

The UK will see its warmest day of the week on Saturday with a maximum of 23C in London.

Sunday will start off dry and sunny in most eastern areas, but it will remain cloudy in Northern Ireland with showers around the coast.

Met Office Meteorologist Luke Miall said: "We are set to see a bit of a change as we head in towards the weekend as high pressure is starting to build across the country.

"For a couple of days we are likely to see some dry and sunny weather pushing its way."

The sun is set to stay with clear skies across the country as we enter the first week of September.

Temperatures are predicted to hit a high of 25C on Wednesday in London.
