Facebook stats reveal that BREXIT was the top discussion topic of 2016
Social network proves that the EU referendum dominated the internet this year
POLITICS dominated Facebook this year, with Brexit the most talking about topic in the UK.
The social network has released new stats which show the EU referendum vote drove 16 million conversations.
It was followed by the US Presidential election - which was the top topic globally.
The London Mayoral Election was fifth - with the Euro 2016 championship third and the death of David Bowie forth.
Facebook yesterday released its Year in Review data, taking a look back at the moments, places and people that moved people in 2016.
The rankings were based on how often a person posted about that topic. But it excluded people liking, sharing or commenting on existing posts.
Here are Facebook's top 10 most discussed topics of the year
1) Brexit
2) US Elections
3) Euro Cup
4) David Bowie
5) London Mayoral Election
6) Olympics
7) Pokemon Go
8) Muhammad Ali's death
9) Brussels Attack
10) Jo Cox's murder
The rankings were based on how often a person posted about that topic. But it excluded people liking, sharing or commenting on existing posts.
With more than 1.79billion people on Facebook, including 31million people logging on daily in the UK alone, Facebook is considered a great barometer of what mattered most to people this year.
